Eddie Bauer Jilted by Jos. A. Bank

JiltedBride60Outdoor retailer Eddie Bauer was left standing at the altar yesterday as would-be buyer Jos. A. Bank Clothiers agreed to be acquired by competitor The Men’s Wearhouse.

Nearly a month ago we wrote about the proposed acquisition of EB by Banks as a tactic to stave off The Men’s Wearhouse in its designs for the strategic purchase of Banks. It appears, with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, that tactic did not deter The Men’s Wearhouse.

I’m personally disappointed as I was looking forward to the merger. I saw an opportunity for EB to adopt Banks’ marketing and sales tactics, such as the ‘buy one, get three free’ Banks has dumbed down to. Who wouldn’t want a shirt, pants and base layer with the purchase of a down jacket?

Bauer gets $48 million from Banks as part of their agreement’s 6% break-up fee but that is an insufficient infusion of cash to solve Bauer’s myriad of problems.

If you have access to around $850 million Eddie Bauer can be yours. Go for it!
