The Googled States of America

01/27/2014

Have you ever started typing a query into Google and had it “autocomplete” your search for you? If you’re like the millions of people who use Google every day, you know exactly what we’re talking about.

That Googling you do day in and day out is feeding the beast known as Autocomplete. Google Autocomplete’s algorithm takes what millions of users input into the search box every day and then uses it to predict future searches and offer up suggestions as a query is typed.

Now, while Google often generates accurate “autocompletes,” it also generates some really bizarre and hilarious results.

The following map, which contains a lot of references to secession, has something for almost everyone. Well, almost everyone. There are a couple of blank states because, apparently, Google says those states don’t “want anything.”

Isn’t odd to learn that Wyoming wants an aircraft carrier? Perhaps they want to secure more military might on land, air and sea – before wanting to secede.

Or try ‘Why is (the state of your choice) so…’ and the results can be amusing.

Considering sub zero temperatures grip the midwest as this is written maybe Google isn’t so goofy after all.
