Valentines Day – The Numbers of Love

02/12/2013

valentines_5With Valentines Day around the corner retailers are busy trying to pry every penny of true love, guilt or obligation from consumers on this “holiday”.

Grocers have gotten into Valentines Day in a bigger way than ever in their floral departments and with expansive displays of chocolates and gifts.

At Target the Card department was elbow to elbow Sunday afternoon.

Make no mistake – Valentines Day is BIG BUSINESS!

To find out just how big I turned to Steve Cooper a contributor to Forbes. Here’s what I found:

– The average person plans to spend $130.97 on candy, cards, gifts and more.
– Men will spend an average of $175.61, while women will spend roughly $88.78.
– For consumers above the age of 18, total spending is expected to reach $18.6 billion.
– 26.3% plan to give a gift found online; up from 19.3% last year.
– Others will make purchases at discount stores (39.6%), department stores (33.2%), specialty stores (22.9%), floral shops (19.6%), jewelry stores (11.2%), specialty clothing stores (7.5%) and catalogs (2.6%).

What the heck happened to the catalog business?

More interesting data points were revealed by Logitech, the computer peripheral company:

– 21%of single Americans admit to damaging their tablet or smartphone while being intimate.
– 81% of single Americans think they make more mistakes in text messages (i.e., auto-corrects) than in the bedroom – RIGHT!
– 31% of tablet owners have admitted to disastrous auto-corrects when typing flirty messages.
– Nearly 38% of Americans admit to being more monogamous with their gadgets than in their love life. WTF?

I’d be careful with the gadget vs. loved one thing…this year, mCommerce is expected to increase of 55.7%, and mobile sales will account for 15% of all retail eCommerce. Without your mobile device there may be no shopping or no love.
