Black Friday Earlier On Thursday

11/12/2012

Retailers are known for pushing holidays earlier every year. Most noticeable for consumers is the setting of Christmas in stores – prior to Halloween!

This year Thanksgiving has become a retail casualty.

The American tradition of turkey dinner, 9 hours of NFL football and napping has been deemed not good enough by retailers.

After stuffing ourselves with turkey and all the trimmings on Thanksgiving, the following day has traditionally been the day that begins the annual holiday shopping rush. All that’s changing now.

Over the years, stores have been expanding their hours on Black Friday to get ahead of the competition, but the kickoff is increasingly happening right after shoppers finish their turkey feast.

Of the big retail names, Walmart and Sears will be opening at 8pm Thanksgiving. Target at 9pm.

Whether or not retail encroachment is good or bad I just hope retailers don’t start calling Thanksgiving – Black Thursday. That’s the name given to Thursday, October 24, 1929, when the New York Stock Exchange plummeted, leading to the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Probably not a good choice of names.
