3 Million iPads In 3 Days

Apple said yesterday it sold 3 million iPads in the three days since the launch of the iPad Mini. The figure includes both the Mini and the refreshed fourth generation full-sized iPad.

3 mil in 3 days has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

That doubles the sales of the 3G iPad launched last March – but that should be no surprise as the Mini is a new gadget…not just an upgrade to an existing gadget.

Starting at $329 the iPad Mini will give other tablets stiff competition. Both Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD and Google’s Nexus 7, each starting at $199, stand to lose some sales. But with over $100 difference between them and the iPad Mini the damage may be minimal.

Perhaps a bigger casualty of the Mini may be the iPad. Cannibalization within Apple is likely to hit the iPad hardest. Analysts believe the Mini will sell enough units to offset the lower dollar sales – leading to a neutral impact on overall sales. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimates $12.6 billion in overall iPad revenue in the December quarter. However, the mix and unit totals may shift depending on Mini availability.

With sales as strong as this it’s likely we’ll have to endure the annoying “Heart and Soul” spot a bit longer.
