Cruising Through Checkout Thanks To Smartphone

04/28/2011

Grocery shopping is a chore. Perhaps the least desirable aspect of grocery shopping is checking out. Until now the two checkout options have been standing in line (not a good option) or self checkout (a painful interaction with bar codes).

At least one grocer is looking to change the mix and add a third option. And there’s an app for that.

Stop & Shop stores, in Massachusetts,  announced yesterday the launch of its first mobile application for iPhone and Android devices. Stop & Shop seeks to simplify customers shopping experience. Customers are invited to download the mobile application for free at the App Store or Android Market.

By aiming the phone’s camera at the bar code on a product package, a user can see the price and add it to an electronic shopping cart. Once shopping is done, the app relays the information to a checkout register, where the customer can pay with cash or a credit card. There’s no need for a store employee to manually scan the items, making checkout much faster.

It’s quite possible this app could reduce the chore factor of grocery shopping!
