Fat Tuesday Signals The End of Fat Ronald McDonald

Today is Fat Tuesday – unless First Lady Michelle Obama has outlawed it ’cause it’s “fat”. Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday.” But what does fat mean in this context? Does it mean that this particular Tuesday is big, loud, boisterous, and obnoxious? It is all of those things, but that’s not what fat refers to here. It actually means animal fat, as in lard, which must be used up on that last day before Lent.

Exit Stage Left

Another icon associated with “fat” may biting the dust. Ronald McDonald survived the whole Super Size me deal relatively unscathed. Unfortunately, Mr. McDonald may be undone by lattes and salads rather than calories and fat grams.

With intensifying concern over obesity rates McDonald’s is distancing itself from its fast-food origins, adding cafe’-friendly items such as fruit smoothies and gussied up restaurants with free WiFi and padded seats.

“They’re trying to get a Starbucks feel,” said Joel Cohen, president of Cohen Restaurant Marketing Group in Raleigh, N.C. “You’ll see the greens and the browns, those nice earthy tones.” Spoken like a real pro I might add.

Ronald McDonald will not completely fade away. He’s the icon of over 300 Ronald McDonald Houses, which lodge families who need to be near their sick children.

But, c’mon, Man! Dumping Ronald McDonald for “those nice earthy tones” will not cut it. I suspect McDonald’s will be back with Ronald faster than you can say “New Coke”.
