Twitter Penetrates American Life – But Where’s The Money?

A stunning 8% of American adults who use the internet are Twitter users according to research released December 9, 2010 by Pew Internet Research. Twitter is especially popular among young adults, minorities and those who live in cities.

What’s oddly missing from the chart below, courtesy of Silicon Alley Insider, which identifies the percentage of Twitter users who use the site for various activities is where’s all the shopping, “liking” and opportunities for commerce? I’m reading about it, prescribing it for clients, participating in it – but I don’t see it here!

Clearly there’s a big business in commerce related activities on Twitter. Last May Twitter launched Twitter Business Center. But the question still lingers…is Twitter a channel for commerce or another marketing channel? According to the findings of the Pew study it’s the latter. Time will tell. Right now Facebook and Groupon clearly have an edge in commerce over Twitter.
